THE COMPETITION

The Carolina Quarterly Brew Off is a quarterly homebrew competition located in Raleigh, NC, hosted by Atlantic Brew Supply and Raleigh Brewing Company.

The goal of the competition is to bring the North Carolina homebrewing community closer together, to educate homebrewers, and to provide a way for local homebrewers to be recognized for their craft.

Here’s how it works: four times per year, we have an open beer competition. Participants can enter beer of any style, but each quarter will also have a wild card style, in which specific ingredients and/or techniques must be used. All beers are judged by qualified beer judges and feedback is returned to each participant, and each quarter will see a Best of Show Winner crowned. As this is the Carolina Quarterly Brew Off, participation is open only to NC residents.

At the end of the year, all 4 Best of Show winners will be asked back to compete in a head-to-head showdown that is presented to the public. The public will taste each brewer’s beer and then decide by ballot whose is the best. Each brewer will provide 10 gallons (ingredients financed by Atlantic Brew Supply) and patrons will sample the beers at Raleigh Brewing Company. The chosen brewer is then crowned the Champion of the Carolina Quarterly Brew Off (along with many other sweet prizes)!

THE ORGANIZERS

The competition is organized by the crew at Atlantic Brew Supply, the homebrew shop located in Raleigh, all of whom have a passion for brewing great craft beer at home. We all started as, and continue to be, homebrewers and we love watching raw ingredients become tasty brews!

We are also helped by Whit Baker, an experienced beer judge who helps to make sure everything we do in the administration of the contest makes sense. Thank you, Whit!

We inherited the competition from its founder, former Raleigh Brewing Company head brewer John Federal, who started organizing homebrew competitions in 2010 as his way of giving back to the homebrewing community. We have benefited greatly from John’s excellent organization skills and dedication to making the CQBO great. Thanks, John!

I might be able to get my local trio to help with some live music at an event and enjoying visiting for the first time last month.

I live in California and am inspired by the competition. How strict are you on the NC resident rule?

Unfortunately we have to be fairly strict – have you sought out similar contests in California? Cheers!
